Tackling leadership training and development shortcomings: 3 paradigms to consider

A recent HBR article on building a strong learning culture at the workplace pointed out the reasons most training and development programmes fail to close the ASK (attitude, skills and knowledge) gap in its employees:

  1. Content/curriculum isn't current, making it unhelpful in meeting current needs.

  2. One-size-fits-none. Every learner is unique, requiring greater personalization to support meaningful learning.

  3. Don’t know how to apply the acquired knowledge on the job.

  4. A gap between the importance of learning and finding time for it. Management talks about the importance of learning but in actuality, employees have very little time for it.

  5. People have different attitudes to learning. Not everyone thinks of themselves as a lifelong learner, or has the skills to learn well and use what they've learned.

But there is a solution. I believe trainers should consider these 3 paradigms when designing a training and development programme to help leaders learn effectively.

1. Learning Should be Personalised🦄
This is hard to achieve, but is not impossible. By personalising learning experiences to acknowledge the unique needs, preferences, and learning styles of individuals, we can unlock the immense potential within them.

2. Learning Should be Socialised 👥
Learning doesn't happen in isolation; it thrives in community. Socialising the learning experience elevates the learning process, fostering collaboration, diverse perspectives, and a rich tapestry of insights. Collective intelligence and wisdom emerge when a group of people work together effectively.

3. Learning Should be Contextualised🌍
Learning gains resonance when it is rooted in real-world context. Contextualised learning aims to connect theory to practical applications, providing a guide to understanding how a piece of learned knowledge translates into solving real and current challenges.
