How to stay motivated in an infinite game

Leaders are humans too, and need immediate acknowledgement to know that we’re on the right path.

The problem is that it’s not as simple to measure success in leadership. Unlike games with clear rules and defined endpoints, the pursuit of impactful leadership is an infinite game.

As leaders, we navigate a landscape where the dividends of our efforts may not be fully realised within our lifetime. Yet, it is our responsibility to keep investing in the people we are given care of.

This requires a paradigm shift.

Here’s how to keep your motivation up when you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel.

1. Embrace the long-term vision
Focus on the larger purpose and the positive impact our leadership can have on future generations, even if immediate results aren't visible.

2. Celebrate small wins
Acknowledge and celebrate incremental achievements along the way. Recognizing progress, no matter how small, reinforces the value of our efforts.

3. Focus on the process, not just outcomes
Shift your mindset from solely outcome-oriented to appreciating the journey. Recognize the value in the continuous effort, improvement, and learning.

4. Seek feedback
Regularly seek feedback from your team. Positive feedback can be reinforcing, and constructive criticism can guide adjustments for better future outcomes.

5. Find intrinsic motivation
Identify the aspects of leadership that intrinsically motivate you. Whether it's the joy of mentoring others, contributing to a cause, or personal fulfilment, tapping into intrinsic motivation can sustain you throughout the journey.

6. View leaders as learners
In the pursuit of personal and professional growth, view leadership as an investment in continuous learning and self-improvement.

7. Build a supportive network
Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors, peers, or advisors who understand the nature of long-term leadership. Their insights and encouragement can be invaluable. The immediate return of our leadership is often hard to measure. But we shouldn’t be disheartened by this. As long as we have the mindset to take care of the people that we are responsible for – to leave them in better shape than when we first found them – we will pave the way for eternal rewards with our current actions.
